Hello Good friends: The journey towards a fully realized production of The Good Manners of Colonized Subjects continues....
I followed a llamada, a call to train with teachers in Jerez, the cuna, the cradle of flamenco to deepen my ability to present the dance & create new sections of fierce rooted choreography.
Here, the first gritos, the first laments of flamenco resounded in the 1400s when the gitano gypsy community arrived in Andalucía after their very long journey (from India, so goes one story.)
Here, I've encountered all I sought and more....incredible teachers like Chiqui de Jerez, Diego de la Margara, Manuela Carpio, Coral de los Reyes...connections to India ...opportunities to record an entirely original musical score with some letras, lyrics in Caló and Hindi.
Wait till you hear, wait till you see...

GRATITUDE
This first year, audiences in Santa Fe and Honolulu shared heartfelt responses about the inspiration and catharsis they experienced and the need for this play to be seen. This inspires me too!
- A GRASSROOTS TOUR in 2019: That's what coming to me - an organic way to "workshop the play" by presenting different incarnations to different audiences...in a variety of spaces...so that the play gets seen and shaped and along the way, perhaps some inspired places and people with the means to cover the $30,000 production costs will do so and and present and premiere the play in winter 2019. That's the dream. (We're also writing grants & sending our promo packages to theaters) A ver...
ON THE 2019 CALENDAR so far to present the play and/or creativity workshops: American Samoa & The Barn at Gravity Hill Farm near Lambertsville, NJ...how's that for faraway and close! Please share suggestions - I'd love to bring The Good Manners to you!
CONTRIBUTE TO THE GOOD MANNERS
For the next needed step, $5000 is good enough to commission and rehearse new flamenco choreography and record a new percussive lyric music score with original songs. I'll be in Jerez through mid-January to complete this work. All donations are gratefully accepted to make this step possible. They are tax-deductible through our fiscal sponsor, Hamaatsa.
I ask for your support in manifesting that which I believe is of value and is of service to a collective catharsis and healing and a celebration of our cross cultural connections.
Your continuing donations ALLOW this work of developing, presenting and promoting the play to continue.
The dream of Faraway is Close, the umbrella organization for the play, is to present it with accompanying creativity workshops that encourage everyone to stand up in their story - creating step by step, dance by dance, a network of resonance and connections. Así. Aisa. Like that
In gratitude for all our stories, all our journeys...

The Good Manners of Colonized Subjects is a solo play by Shebana Coelho, a writer, director and performer originally from India, now based in New Mexico. Through original poetry and choreography drawn from flamenco and Sanskrit classical theatre, it interweaves dance and memoirs of colonization and liberation, circling towards a cathartic re-imagining of that moment indigenous to the species: the incandescent experience of art. The poetry/monologues are in English...with threads of Urdu, Spanish, Konkani, Mongolian. Duration: 75 minutes
